Allow me to share a bit.
My love had always been in investments. As my old friends here in PS will know. Hence I went on to take a business degree in SMU and ended up majoring in finance and marketing. Marketing went on to become my 2nd love. Great eh...studying subjects that were of my interest.
All in all, while some modules were pretty much useless. Alot of other material that you learn in school can be useful. And of course its a matter of adapting theory to fit the practical situation at the moment in time.
I went on to become the investment club's president, grew the club into the biggest club in the school and went on to win several marketing/branding/business competitions. All of this exposed me to more areas of life that I would never have experienced if I merely just stuck to my books.
I took a term off school to start my business. And I must say, the general business degree and material that I learnt in school did somewhat help. Of course streetsmarts will be learnt as you get the hardknocks while doing business.
I've graduated late last year. At this moment, our company's total mancount is at 9.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that. Just following what you believe in. The paper route might or not might be the way for you. But even if you take it, you can twist/turn and mould it to become the route of your calling.
As for the well-to-do part, I come from a fairly comfortable household too. Hence its a matter of how you are able to self-motivate yourself, be passionated about something and hunger for massive success. Not normal success mind you. But success that makes others envy you. Taking action on the hunger allow you to achieve great things in life.
My advice, try out different things or start a business when you are young. The opportunity cost is much lower and you can afford to fall down many times. Me and my friends failed countless times. In fact its embarressing when I look back.
Just do it. =)

Business and Enterprise / Questions on Starting Up / Re: Biz Start-up for teens

Not intending to be a wet blanket.
But i remembering hearing before that 98% of the population would at one point or another, think of starting a F&B outlet.
So the more important question is, why do you want to start one?
Passion? Catering to specific market needs/demands? Have a unique selling proposition for your F&B outlet? Or maybe you have experience running an F&B outlet? Ops management, inventory management?
Think we can better assist with more information. =)

Business and Enterprise / Questions on Starting Up / Re: Question on Affliate Internet Marketing

The guy Vanson Tan owns http://www.massivecashgenerator.comHe's merely promoting his own strategy for making money online through affiliate marketing. It is not at all related to MLM. Affiliate marketing is when you promote someone else's product through an affiliate link. Just like the link you posted. And if whenever someone clicks on the link, their computer is cookied. In the event that the prospect buys the product, you get a commission for the sale. Thats about it. But the product at www.massivecashgenerator.com looks really crappy though and the testimonials seem abit shady. The bonuses are all just a bunch of resell rights products that you can get for a few cents. Regards, Alvin Huang

Will be glad to have you around Tommy.
Wow last year of uni already. Sheesh you are on par with me now. Haha.
Oh c'mon, not everyone used the tradestation then. It was so expensive then. Anyhows seems like they only have their online version now.
I'll still stick to programming on my old and trusted metastock. LOL
And well its all your fault that it ain't rowdy anymore. You disappeared!

Why submit a blogspot blog to blog directories and waste time?
It'd be better if Tommy buys a .com, installs wordpress. At least then he's building something viable. By the way, montenizing a blog through adsense doesn't make sense to me. Its like you want people to read your stuff and yet try to lead them away to other websites at the same time.
Even johnchow, with the traffic he gets, earns $800 from adsense montly. That's very little considering how much traffic he gets. So imho, adsense devalues the brand of a blog.

Seemed that some Spirit of Enterprise 2007 nominees were at the celebration. Its heartwarming to know that PS is gaining strength and the events are becoming bigger and bigger, especially with the tieup with MDA.
Pity I missed the email invite and was busy with other things.
